Philanthropy to benefit the poor/less fortunate, as distinct from bad philanthropy / philanthropy done poorly. (c.p. do the right thing)
Is this a societal priority or just personally useful?
If the latter, should it be subsidised via tax-deductibility?
Funding opera houses over poverty reduction? By people who’d rather see their names in stone at the entrance to a building, than actually change fellow citizens’ lives.
What would change, if we ended tax-deductibility for gifts made to artistic institutions? What is being subsidised?
