I thought about incompleteness this morning.
It was inspired by listening to TORSO — a concert of sketches and fragments — given the wonderful pianist Marino Formenti at Musikfest Bremen in 2013.
TORSO’s juxtaposition of incomplete ideas by contemporary and classical composers reminded me that:
- creativity is the transposition of one thing into the the context of another; and
- half-thoughts — moments of creative risk and experimentation — provoke completions.
A subsequent discussion with Marino about Michael Haneke shaped my thinking on a boundary between art and design: design must be aesthetic; art must provoke emotion.
