People I love meeting people. I’m curious, they’re intriguing.

Endorphins I founded and ran a gender-balanced Coffee Cake Cycling Club before getting into running. I sometimes run with the Zurich Hash House Harriers. For mental and physical flexibility I attend experimental exercise & experiences at Serratus.

Contemporary culture Different ways of thinking excite me. Art must provoke emotion — even discomfort. I enjoy works that challenge and incite reflection. Interning for Austria’s foremost contemporary ensemble, Klangforum Wien, introduced me to modern music and the breathtakingly intense pianist Marino Formenti. I was fortunate to live for while with dancers, who exposed me to Philippe Saire, Wayne McGregor and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Arthouse Cinema I live among Zurich’s best cinemas: Kino Xenix, Riffraff, and Houdini. Fabulous screenings, you can take drinks in the auditorium, no intervals. (Merci Meili!)

Taste A job as a kitchen porter in a private members’ club gave me a better appreciation of food, taste and the intensity (and humour) of professional kitchens. I enjoy adventures in taste and cooking.

International Born in Bath, England, I enjoyed different cultural environments living, working and studying in Vienna, Cambridge, Paris, Berlin, Minas Gerais and Zurich.

Multilingual I speak French, German and English. Decent Swiss-German. My Brazilian-Portuguese is rusty and I acquired a smattering of street castellano while hitch-hiking in Spain with David Beckham. As my great-uncle Larry always used to say, “l’homme qui parle deux langues vaut deux hommes.”

Legal logic I studied English Law and French Law in Cambridge and Paris. Law is akin to reading philosophy and applying mathematics. It demands precision and requires discussion. I read the small print before I sign.

Journalist I achieved a childhood dream by becoming a foreign correspondent. When I began paid journalism - writing for my local daily newspaper at the age of 13 - my goal was to work internationally and report on other cultures. Experience gained with Reuters, The Independent, The Guardian, and Sky television led to a job with Bloomberg.

Financial Bloomberg tells the story of money, in real time. I questioned CEOs and board members of companies across Switzerland. (There were also stories on art heists, extradition, murder, plane crashes and stolen bank accounts.) I interviewed central bankers, economists, regulators and lobbyists to report on the battle to (re)regulate global finance.

MBA The reporting of business awoke my interest in the business of business. Studying at HSG in St Gallen taught me more about value, organizations, entrepreneurship and emerging markets. And about myself.

Adventurer Hitch-hiking with a Galáctico: I rode from Paris to Madrid with a life-size, home-made, wooden David Beckham cut-out. It was Beckham’s first season with Real Madrid, so I assumed him to be the most recognizable Englishman to help me attract rides for my journey.

Shoot the French: I organized a Lomography competition and exhibition in Paris. Free cameras, film development and party for hundreds of students from across the Cité Universitaire.

STEMette from 1750: I campaigned for pioneering, 18th–century astronomer Caroline Herschel, to be given greater recognition by the William Herschel Society. I tapped astronomy networks winning the full, public support of the American Astronomical Society, leading international astronomers and astrophysicists, and members of the Royal Astronomical Society. Donations led to paid annual lectureships in Bath and in London by promising young female astroscientists. The campaign encouraged the group to modernise its name, finally rebranding as the Herschel Society three years later.

Halloween Holy Blood Drive: I organized a Halloween-themed blood donation drive at the Blutspende Zentrum Zürich. Fancy dress costumes, and English and German ghost stories read to donors while they gave blood and thrombocytes.

These diverse, enriching experiences make me excellent.

In the 18XXs the Quakers, led in part by their belief in the equality of all people, changed retail culture by introducing price labels.

These public, fixed, and non-discriminatory prices set by a retailer changed shopping culture for the the next TKTKTK years.

Connecting people + bright ideas

I’m a curious and creative multi-slash person, who values clear communication in words and numbers. I craft bold messages to change people’s behaviour. I like connecting the right people with (b)right ideas.

Writing is thinking

I tend ideas in my mind garden. It has wilder and less wild parts; there’s growth and decay; some thoughts are recent, others old, and — of course — age ≠ maturity. Entering the garden may cause or require additional thought. So if you don’t like thinking, well, then my garden is not for you.

Money, rules, & people

My background in international law, newswire journalism and Swiss finance forms the foundations of a multifaceted thinker who loves details, data and deadlines. I publish Money Rules People observations on political-economy, behaviour economics, and law. It’s sometimes local, sometimes universal. Ultimately it’s about how people rule money, where ever you are.

Projects

At the moment I’m particularly interesting in pricelessness, emigrants (as one myself), where to invest the hours of my life, tasting & cooking, deliberative thought, liberal democracies, and marketing — toujours marketing!

Digital gardens

A digital garden is a collection of notes organized by association instead of by date. Posts don’t scroll into oblivion; they accumulate links and get revisited.

Two properties matter here:

Bidirectional links. When note A links to note B, B automatically knows about A — check the backlinks panel below on this page.
Topology over chronology. The graph view shows the actual shape of the thinking, which a reverse-chronological feed hides.

Working in public raises the floor on rigor: a half-thought you’d tolerate in a private note gets finished when someone might read it.

It also compounds. Notes in a garden keep collecting readers and backlinks long after a feed would have buried them.
