If electoral law is cantonal, then how should Zürich’s be changed?

Digital votes
If ESIG / digital signature has legal validity for contract formation, then can it be used for elections? Alternatively in combination with an authenticator, e.g. AGOV authenticator already used for government services.

If citizens already trust the software in ATMs and mobile apps to authorise their valuable financial communications, why not trust software to authorise their valuable political communications.

c.f. money and politics, money in politics.
c.f. how much would you be willing to pay in order to be allowed to vote.

Make it easy, make it expensive
Incentivise voting by making it really easy (authenticable anywhere and anytime) and/or making it progressively expensive c.p. quadratic voting.

Easy voting
allows votes to be tallied in real-time and let voters change their vote until the deadline. Allowing a cooling-off period, takes the heat out of protest vote, and means campaigns can be run more efficiently No over-expenditure on matters that are settled, no need to over-spend or dramatise as insurance against a shock results, no more representative polling.

Soft close
Via a soft close, undecided citizens (who hadn’t yet voted) would be informed in time that an issue is close enough for their vote to decide the issue.

Expensive voting
to me, this matters a lot.

c.p. varying vote-weight with age.

e.g. a renewing allotment of votes that can be cast during a fixed period (e.g. a year, a legislature, a lifetime).

if we exclude the young from voting due to immaturity, then may be exclude the old from voting due to senility?

Qualified voting
Offer distinct populations exclusive or over-proportionate voice in a matter.
e.g. women-only votes on abortion laws
e.g. discount voting weight with age, so younger citizens given more weight on climate change (in)action votes.

Super-majorities by age
e.g. laws affecting today’s pension rights, requiring majorities of those beyond working age (beneficiaries), those of working age (payers), and those not yet in working age (debtors).
